…

Freddie and her Mariana

……..

All in black, all in black

Cloth and sensibility

Grief and such heartbreak, when

Mariana left her Freddie.

.

Take her back, take her back

Her kisses and her heart

Mistress of Lawton Hall, how

inconstant thou art.

.

Wearing rings, wearing rings

Around their fairest throats

Betrayed by prejudice, oh

how poor Freddie dotes’.

.

No to be, not to be

Mariana and her Anne

Journals of sorrow; tears of

Mariana and her man.

.

Smoke her out, smoke her out

In both word and in deed

Miss Lister loves ladies, though

ungodly, twas decreed.

.

‘Make your peace, make your peace

Be what your heart tells’

So insisted Anne. New love

broke Mariana’s spell.

.

Wait no more, wait no more

Mariana lost her chance…

Lost out to another; a

neighbouring, happenstance.

  2. As a gay man, this piece really speaks to me. My poem was about my own struggles, finally coming out, and even later, finally accepting myself.
I hope one day no-one will have to struggle due to sexual preference.
    Peace.

  3. Oh what delicasy, I love the repetition used in the first line of each stanza, it’s very effective. This is very poignant -and beautifully written, I can read it all day. Great job done.
